Q&A with Rob Kazinsky

Share

  • Q

Thank you for joining us today! How have the Truebies been reacting to your character so far?

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

It's been surprisingly and encouragingly positive! I wasn't expected a positive reaction at all from the Alcide/ Eric/ and Bill camps. It seems that people have liked seeing a different than expected version of Warlow.

  • Q

What is the most interesting experience you have had on set of True Blood?

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

Kind of just the entire package to be honest. It's been an incredible experience to see how the show works and how HBO puts on a such a great show. Working on something of the fantasy genre and seeing it brought to life has been fascinating.

  • Q

Is it hard filming scenes at night?

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

Haha, yes it really is! With the amount of night shoots we do, we shoot from 5PM to dawn, regularly and often. It's hard to never see daylight and eat at weird hours and your body is getting all twisted. It is strange but it's also kind of fun. I'm a night owl myself, so it kind of felt okay for me.

  • Q

What is it like working with Ryan and Anna?

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

Ryan is amazing. Ryan is without a doubt one of the most talented actors I've ever seen. He's just so damn good and I'm not entirely sure that everyone realizes how truly good he is. It's been a blast working with him. Anna, it's been a gift working with her from Day 1. We're quite similar people-- we're both sarcastic. It's been an incredible experience.

  • Q

if you had the option, do you think Sookie and Ben/Warlow would have been a good couple?

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

Oh, yea. I think Ben and Sookie would have been a great couple and with the added complexity of Warlow thrown in there-- the genuine good guy-ness of Ben does apply to Warlow as well. He's not a simply evil character. There are many shades to him. In his full, dark glory as Warlow, I still think that he's quite a good match for Sookie.

  • Q

How do you deal with the pressure of being a love intrest for sookie? with so many #TeamBill or #TeamEric fans does it ever become too much?

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

No, it actually hasn't! The response has been more positive than I was expecting. I try not to worry too much about the ex-boyfriends, like dating somebody in real life. We try to play the chemistry of it and I really like Warlow and Sookie together. It offers something different to the TeamBill TeamEric camps.

  • Q

Did playing the part of benlow progress your acting in a way which you feel comfortable trying out for more diverse roles?

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

I think actually Ben, not Warlow, is probably the most similar to ME character that I've played in my life. Playing a millennia old vampire has certainly been an eye-opener. I've played a few bad guys, but never an actual monsters. I feel like I'm in a good place to start fanging out on any job that I ever do.

  • Q

How was filming such a hilarious and homoerotic scene with costar Ryan Kwanten?

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

Wonderful. Wonderful! Ryan is so. The interesting thing about Ryan and Jason is that he's always involved in these surreal story lines and the reason they work is because he's 100% in them and 100% believes them as they're happening. He was just so good at making it comfortable and easy. Anna said to me early on, you're very lucky you have this first scene with Ryan, because he's so good at making everyone feel at ease (he's obviously had more of these types of scenes than anyone else). We had a great time and great laughs.

  • Q

DId the cast know your character was Warlow and if not, how did they react when they found out.

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

No it was really funny! I bumped into Nelsan at the gym and I mentioned that I was playing Warlow and he was like What? You? They thought it was super cool that this super nice guy character was going to be the BIG BAD.

  • Q

Were you a truebie before you were cast as the role of Ben? #FSU #HBOCollege

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

No, True Blood is one of those shows with such depth and complexity that you can't just have it on in the background. I hadn't gotten around to doing it and finally between my first and second auditions I watched every episode in 3 days. I had a complete. marathon. I think it's an awesome awesome show, I really like it. I'll be watching forever.

  • Q

whats the atmosphere like when the cameras are off? #FSU #HBOCollege

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

Honestly I've never worked with nicer people. It is such a challenging show to work on-- The hours are so inhumane, they're so draining. The only reason everyone is so happy to go into work is that the crew is filled with great people. Always a laugh, always in good humors. I know it sounds cliche, but it really is true. It's one giant family. They've been together 6 years.

  • Q

Favourite person to do a scene with?

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

Anna. 100%. I love working with Anna. She has been incredibly good for me. She's made me a much better actor and I think we became friends. Truly, she was a gift every day.

  • Q

If you could choose to be a supernatural being in real life which one would you be and why?

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

I'd probably want to be a werewolf. Mainly because I'd still get to see some daylight and I can't think of anything as cool as becoming a wolf and running as fast as you can anywhere you want to run. And also, you could just walk up to people and they'd feed you. Yea, I think being a wolf would be pretty cool.

  • Q

How was the audition process for getting the role of Ben/Warlow?

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

Pretty simple, to be honest. Some auditions followed by a chemistry test with Anna. Some past auditions I've done have gone badly but from the moment I read this character I felt like I was Ben, and I felt like I could become this character.

  • Q

What was it like joining such a well established show? Were you nervous?

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

Yes, I was a bit nervous. It's always hard to join somebody else's family. It's like knocking on the door of some random's street and having dinner with some random large family. But I was made to feel welcome at the table right from Day 1. I felt like a member of the family pretty quickly, largely thanks to Stephen and Anna.

  • Q

How hard was it for you to get Ben's american accent right?

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

It was decided that he should be English because all fae should be English. It's never easy for me to do an American accent. Nobody will be a harsher critic than I would about this.

  • Q

Was it weird the first time you filmed with the fake blood and the fangs?

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

It should have been, but it wasn't! I've wanted to do that all my career. Fangs, blood, death, murder, flying. It's bucket list for me. I'm addicted to the actual fake blood. It's basically pure sugar and I'm a sugar monster. I sit there and drink it for fun (which Anna thinks is disgusting). Some people take out their fangs when not filming but I just keep them in all day. I really enjoy being a monster.

  • Q

Were you expecting such a twist such as that of Ben being Warlow?

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

No, absolutely not! I auditioned to play Ben, not Warlow. It was, like, the coolest moment of my year. When I saw my name was "Benlow" on the clothing rack it was very cool for me, to get to play part vampire.

  • Q

Favorite scene that you did? :P

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

I think my favorite happen in this upcoming Sunday's episode. We go back into the story of Warlow and Lillith and I got to wear a wig. Wearing a really good wig is really fulfilling for someone with as little hair as I have.

  • Q

Is the character Sean you played similar to Ben in ways in True Blood?

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

Only in the fact that they look similar. Ben is disingenuous, simple a good man. Completely in control of everything he does. Sean was a very very unchained character who did whatever he wanted and gloried in people's suffering.

  • Q

That's all the time we have today. Thanks again for taking time to answer questions. Any closing words for your fans?

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

I'm incredibly privileged to be part of this show. It's a wonderful thing that not just the cast and crew have made me part of the True Blood family, but it seems that the Truebies have as well. I thank you and hope we don't disappoint!

  • Q

Which one do you like the most, working on a British soap opera or an American TV series?

    Share

    A
    Rob Kazinsky says:

I loved them both in different ways. I loved playing Sean. He really became a part of me. After 256 episodes, it would become a part of you. It was so fun playing a character as complex and interesting. At the same time, it has been absolutely wonderful being out here playing a creature of fantasy like Warlow or Ben. There are no favorites as there hasn't been one character that I haven't loved playing.
