Q&A with Chris Lilley

Share

  • Q

Welcome to today's live Q&A, Chris Lilley. Do you have any opening words for your fans?

    Share

    A
    Chris Lilley says:

HI Ja'mieniacs. Can't wait to try and answer all your questions. Lets do it. #urallquiche

  • Q

Who is your dance inspiration on a night out; Ja'mie, Mr G or Jonah? :)

    Share

    A
    Chris Lilley says:

I start off Jonah but usually end up Gran "Moving on up" by the end of night.

  • Q

Have you ever thought about making a film? I'd love to see you on the big screen ;)

    Share

    A
    Chris Lilley says:

You can't get any better than TV on HBO, ABC and BBC3. Small screens get more viewers than big screens and I like to know lots of people are watching me.

  • Q

A lot of fans post art, remixes, and other creations on your sites. Do you see any of them, and what are some of your favorites?

    Share

    A
    Chris Lilley says:

I see ALL of them. I love the pencil drawings of the characters and the S.mouse Remixes a LOT. But I really like the when my head is photoshopped onto other things.

  • Q

Do you prefer acting as a girl or a boy?

    Share

    A
    Chris Lilley says:

Playing girls is cool but its a lot more fun playing boys. I've been playing Jonah recently and he's my most favourite character. Fake boobs get annoying after a while.

  • Q

Do you find yourself doing Ja'mie's "bitch/fierce" eyes a lot in regular life when someone upsets you? I know I sure do. ILY!

    Share

    A
    Chris Lilley says:

Yeah I pull it out sometimes. When people try to take sneaky photos from across a room while I'm eating usually gets a Ja'mie eye response

  • Q

Which characters personality are you most like??

    Share

    A
    Chris Lilley says:

Ummm. A friend told me Nathan Sims is the most similar character in personality to me. Quiet and rebellious and always gets the last laugh.

  • Q

How much of your shows are improv?

    Share

    A
    Chris Lilley says:

They are completely scripted. I like to expand on the scenes when I'm shooting but mostly its about finding ways to deliver the scripted lines and make them seem real. On the DVD extras you can see the bits where I go off on tangents. But usually what ends up in the show is directly from the script.

  • Q

Do you have to shave your legs when you play Ja'mie?

    Share

    A
    Chris Lilley says:

    Yes. It's not fun

  • Q

Who is your longest living character?

    Share

    A
    Chris Lilley says:

Umm do you mean who have I been playing for the longest time? Mr G was a stand up character that I used to do live on stage many years before I was doing television. I invented him for a cabaret night at my University where everyone had to jump up and do a quick act. Mr G was the closing act and he talked to the crowd as though they were his students and then did a dance to Kermit The Frog's "Rainbow Connection".

  • Q

Do you ever get star struck, like with Katy Perry ...?

    Share

    A
    Chris Lilley says:

Perry is way too starstruck with me so I don't get a chance. I don't hang out with celebrities very much but when I do I don't find them very scary. It's just weird because you feel like you know them. I met Kim Kardashian in a nightclub once and she was really nice. Kanye was with her but he didn't speak. He just looked at me.

  • Q

Whats the weirdest fan encounter you've had?

    Share

    A
    Chris Lilley says:

Having a group of young kids dressed as S.mouse performing Squashed N#*!a at a shopping centre for me was a bit weird.

  • Q

Hiii.. My sister loves u soo much! Her name is Alison, can u tell her that u love her?

    Share

    A
    Chris Lilley says:

I love you Alison. I'm literally obsessed with you.

  • Q

how did you come up with the word quiche?

    Share

    A
    Chris Lilley says:

I have just always thought it was a funny word. It was originally going to be "salad" then I changed it. Quiche is way better. Hearing TV presenters using the word now as if its a legit word is the funniest thing. It's funny how quickly things like that can take off.

  • Q

How long does it take you to dress up and put makeup on as ja'mie?

    Share

    A
    Chris Lilley says:

Not very long at all. I've got it down to about 30 minutes. (excluding the shaving prep). She has a few tricky undergarments that you have to get right. But the hair and make up is pretty simple. Her wig requires a lot of brushing to make it seem real and less wiggy.

  • Q

Out of all the characters you have played who would you most want to be best friends with?

    Share

    A
    Chris Lilley says:

I think Nathan Sims and I would get along. Or maybe Gran. I would definitely avoid Ja'mie

  • Q

How are you liking the single character format? Do you think you'll be doing another multi-character show in the future?

    Share

    A
    Chris Lilley says:

I love it. You get to explore so much of the world of that character. Maybe multi-characters could be next. OR maybe something even more weird.

  • Q

When performing really funny scenes and the people in the background have to be serious, does it take many takes for you to get the shot you want?

    Share

    A
    Chris Lilley says:

The people in the background get scared into not laughing. I tell them they'll get cut from the show if they laugh. Everyone really wants to be on screen so they hold it together. But the actors in the scene definitely have issues not laughing. There's some bloopers on the DVD where this is evident.

  • Q

What did your mum say when she found out the whole show was going to be about Ja'mie? And does she still have the cardboard cutout of you?

    Share

    A
    Chris Lilley says:

She just sent me a picture this morning of her brand new giant Ja'mie lying on the pink balloons poster. She's obsessed with Ja'mie. But she'd be happy with whatever I wanted to do. She even has the S.mouse remix album in her car.

  • Q

Thanks for joining us today, Chris Lilley. Any final thoughts?

    Chris Lilley says:

Thanks HBO. Thanks everyone for joining in. You're all quiche. Ily
