Q&A with Joe Dempsie

Share

  • Q

Thank you Joe Dempsie for joining us today. Joe, what's your favorite part about playing Gendry in Game of Thrones?

    Share

    A
    Joe Dempsie says:

My favorite part so far has been hanging out with Ben Hawkey and Maisie Williams. It allowed me to indulge my inner child again because they keep you on your toes. They're pretty energetic and wake you up pretty quickly! It's great to mess around like a kid again with those two.

  • Q

If you met Gendry in real life, do you think you guys would get along?

    Share

    A
    Joe Dempsie says:

Yeah I think we definitely would. What I like about Gendry is that he's a man of principal and I respect that. The fact that he had a tough upbringing but is still strong willed despite that....I've been lucky to have a nice childhood and not too many problems to overcome in my life so I would appreciate listening to him talking about his early years. I think we would get on nicely! I also think he has sense of humor!

  • Q

as an actor , which actors inspire you ?

    Share

    A
    Joe Dempsie says:

I admire actors that consistently challenge themselves and play a wide range of different roles. Every actor has a reason for being an actor...it's boring to play the same person over and over again. People like Daniel Day Lewis who completely transform time and time again, I look up to. I also like Michael Sheen, Leo Dicaprio is always challenging himself too...he could have been the heartthrob of the movie world but challenged himself with different roles. I really look up to him as well. There's also an English stage actor named Mark Ryland who was in "Jerusalem" a while back.

  • Q

What is the greatest experience you've taken away from working on the set of Game of Thrones so far?

    Share

    A
    Joe Dempsie says:

There's been so many great experiences. The scale of the production is something to behold in itself! The most fun I've had so far filming, is the fight sequence in series 2. I've never done that before. The horse riding, occasional fight training...you get to learn so many new skills that you wouldn't know in everyday life! I really enjoyed learning the fight sequence with the stunt men on set. It was loads of fun.

  • Q

How did you feel during the nude scene with Carice van Houten? Were the leeches real?

    Share

    A
    Joe Dempsie says:

The leeches were real. They had real leeches then some prop leeches. I remember thinking when I read the scene in the script...I wondered how they were going to do that! After deliberation, I came to the conclusion that they were going to use real leeches and they did! I never experienced that before so I guess there's only one way to find out. In terms of the nudity it was fine for me. I think I got off nicely instead of Carice...I still had my trousers on!

  • Q

What other projects are you working on now?

    Share

    A
    Joe Dempsie says:

I'm currently doing a play in London. We just opened this week and did 3 performances so far. It's called "Even Stillness Breathes Softly Against the Brick Wall." It's the first time I've done a play...really hard work and it was something I wanted to challenge myself with. We're getting there, the nerves are still kicking in each night but I'm sure we'll settle down by the time we get to next week. I also did a miniseries here called "South Cliff" directed by Sean Burkin the director of Marcy May Marlene. That comes out in September!

  • Q

Favorite color, favorite book, favorite movie, favorite song?

    Share

    A
    Joe Dempsie says:

Favorite Color: Blue Favorite Book: "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote Favorite Movie: Pulp Fiction and a British Film called "A Room for Romeo Brass" Favorite Song: Move on Up by Curtis Mayfield

  • Q

How did you get Gendry’s role in Game of Thrones? Were you auditioned specifically for this one or for another role too?

    Share

    A
    Joe Dempsie says:

I actually auditioned for 3 other parts being cast as Gendry. I auditioned for Jon Snow initially before they made the pilot. I think a lot of people who ended up in the show auditioned for Jon Snow. THen I auditioned for Pyp and Grenn and eventually got Gendry. I kept thinking they thought I was rubbish but the really nice thing is that they knew what people they wanted to work with and were figuring out where I would fit in in the world of Westeros. I love the part of Gendry and it's my favorite.

  • Q

Who do you think deserves to be the King of Seven Kingdoms and why?

    Share

    A
    Joe Dempsie says:

Hmmmmm....You could argue that in terms of bloodline it could be Gendry. He's Robert Baratheon's only surviving son. There's a question mark about his mother and that could ready the waters a bit. In terms of making a good King, I think Jon Snow has the nobility and compassion to make him a very good leader.

  • Q

Does you and your character Gendry have in common?

    Share

    A
    Joe Dempsie says:

Apart from the ginger beard, I think we both have a stubborness but one that's not without reason. Gendry stands up for what he believes in and I'd like to think I'm the same in that respect. He doesn't seem to be scared of anyone initially and he wouldn't be scared to take a stand if need be. He would also fight to the death for those he cares for...I've never been in that situation though!

  • Q

How was it working with Maisie Williams?

    Share

    A
    Joe Dempsie says:

It's brilliant working with Maisie. It must have been tough for her because she was so young when she started. When you're on set you get to know people so quickly and it must have been tough after Season 1 when she got close to people playing her family members. It's been great for me getting to know her and I've been her new family on the show. She's brilliant, sometimes you watch her instead of paying attention to what you're doing. I'm glad she's an actress and now an actor or else she'd be getting a lot of my work.

  • Q

If Gendry was made king, what would be first on his agenda?

    Share

    A
    Joe Dempsie says:

That's a good question! I'd like to think that given his background he would like to set about redistributing the wealth in Westeros. Like in our society here, 90% of all the money is owned by 5% of all the people. Gendry would try to make things better for the poor. He spent most of his life at the bottom and I don't think he's the kind of person who would forget where he came from too easily.

  • Q

what do you prefer, dragons or dire wolves?

    Share

    A
    Joe Dempsie says:

Direwolf. I've always been a sucker fora dog called an Alaskan Malamoot. It's like a little husky...my dad had one when he was younger.

  • Q

If Jaqen came to Gendry instead of Arya, which three names would Gendry give him?

    Share

    A
    Joe Dempsie says:

I think Gendry even says in the beginning of Season 3...he's arguing with Arya that she didn't pick Tywin, Joffrey and Cersei. I think Joffrey and Cersei would be high up on Gendry's list. Probably who killed Yoren...Armory Lorch!

  • Q

Who is the most misunderstood character in Game of Thrones?

    Share

    A
    Joe Dempsie says:

I sort of think Cersei is really interesting. I used to think it was Theon but I think Season 3 goes a long way explaining his actions and mindset...all of his identity issues are a lot clearer know so people understand him more than they used to. I think Cersei had such a strange life really...to have a son like Joffrey and to never stop loving your children even though he's evil...she shows flashes of compassion which makes her all the more mysterious.

  • Q

How God damn awesome is Ben Hawkey aka. Hot PIe???

    Share

    A
    Joe Dempsie says:

Too awesome for words I think! Ben Hawkey is brilliant, he's one of the funniest men I ever met.

  • Q

That's all the time we have for today's Q&A. Joe, do you have anything else you want to say to your fans before we go?

    Share

    A
    Joe Dempsie says:

Cross your fingers that Gendry makes it out alive and beware of women with leeches.
